I recently came across a fascinating interview….
It was with Starbucks’s CEO & Founder, Howard Schultz and he said something I thought was really insightful for anyone wanting to be successful as a business owner.
When he was trying to grow Starbucks in the early days, he could barely afford to hire people so he would help behind the counters pouring coffee and making drinks with no salary for 2 years.
(crazy to imagine those humble beginnings right?)
He went on a walk with his father in law, and at that time his wife was about 6 months pregnant.
His father in law said, “Hey I respect what you’re doing, but this is a hobby- NOT a viable career path”.
Fortunately Howard’s wife Sherry, was furious at her fathers comments and urged Howard to KEEP GOING. She believed in what he was doing, and most importantly…HIM.
In 2024 Starbucks revenue was over $35 BILLION…
A couple of lessons I gleaned from this.

Most people overestimate what they can do in 1 year and underestimate what they can do in 10 years.
If you get caught up in the short term thinking about wanting to make a bunch of profit in year 1, you never get to year 5 or 10 when the numbers get really exciting.
Everyone has to pay the price required. No exceptions.

Having people who believe in you and support your dreams is so important
Imagine if his wife said “I agree, I think you should go get a job Howard”?
Sometimes you won’t have that luxury and you’ll need to just be stubborn enough to believe in yourself.
Regardless of whether you buy a franchise, start your own thing, or whatever path your entrepreneurial ventures lead you to…
I’m praying for you right now, that you find the courage and faith to believe in yourself and act on it boldly with all of your heart and grit, and tenacity.
EXPECT it to be hard my friend, and you’ll set yourself up for success much better than asking for it to be easy.
