Back in 1984, Craig and Lea Culver, along with Craig’s parents, George and Ruth, took over an old A&W Root Beer stand in Sauk City, Wisconsin. They didn’t try to reinvent fast food. They just wanted to serve the food they loved most, ButterBurgers and Fresh Frozen Custard.

The burgers were so fresh that in the beginning, Craig actually used an ice cream scoop to portion the beef. And the custard? That became famous for the “Flavor of the Day”, 32 rotating flavors that keep fans coming back to see what’s next.

People loved it. Lines formed. By 1990, they franchised their first location in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Soon after, they crossed state lines, opening in Buffalo, Minnesota. What started as one small-town shop turned into a Midwest phenomenon.
