Kumon’s story began in 1956 in Osaka, Japan, when high school math teacher Toru Kumon noticed his young son struggling in school. Determined to help, he sat at the family’s kitchen table night after night, creating simple worksheets that broke problems down into bite-sized steps. His goal wasn’t just to get his son caught up; it was to help him excel beyond his grade level, develop confidence, and build a lifelong love of learning.

What started as a father helping his son turned into the Kumon Method, a structured system built around self-learning, daily practice, and mastery. Unlike traditional tutoring, Kumon wasn’t about cramming before tests; it was about building skills step by step, so kids could learn independently and at their own pace.

By the 1970s, the method spread quickly through word of mouth, catching the attention of parents and educators worldwide. In 1974, Kumon expanded beyond Japan, opening its first North American center. Parents immediately saw the difference: their children weren’t just passing math and reading; they were gaining discipline, focus, and confidence.

By the late 1980s, Kumon officially began franchising, making it possible for entrepreneurs and educators alike to bring the method into their own communities.
